Worrying is a natural reaction to life’s stressful moments. For some people however, their anxiety is so severe and persistent, they cannot stop the worry. The anxiety interferes with their ability to work, connect with others and even their health.  That is when it is a good time to reach out and call a therapist.

The good news is that anxiety is treatable. There are a variety of therapeutic approaches and we can work together to see which approach works best for you. Some of the approaches I utilize in my practice include psycho-education, cognitive-behavioral therapy, mind-body techniques and psychodynamic psychotherapy.

Anxiety appears in many ways, here are some of the most common:

  1. Thoughts: racing thoughts- thoughts that go in circles and you cannot stop them; negative thoughts- the glass is always half empty.

  2. Body: sleep disturbance- difficulty falling asleep and/or early wake up with anxiety and dread; stomach aches; headaches and muscle tension; trouble catching your breath- shallow breathing.

  3. Emotions: irritability; feeling restless and keyed up, excessive worry and knowing that it is excessive and you just can’t stop.
  4. Behaviors: avoidance of work, people and situations you associate with anxiety.

Simple Techniques for reducing symptoms of anxiety that you can start using today

1

Stay present

Anxiety is often fear of the worse case scenario that could occur in the future.  So stay in the moment and focus on what is happening in the here and now.

2

Breathe

When anxious we often take short shallow breaths.  Breathe deeply and slow down your breath.

3

Gratitude

Be grateful for what is working in your life.  I know it is hard to do when you are very anxious- but look around you and identify 3 things you are grateful for.

4

Be your own best friend

Talk to yourself like you would your best friend. Be kind and thoughtful and see the best in yourself.

Feeling anxious is very difficult. My goal is to have you feel more calm and enjoying your life as soon as possible.
